Abstract

The aim of the research was to assess the coping mechanisms of households, as complex economic and social units, during the recent economic crisis. We found that households followed a wide variety of strategies. We also confirmed that there was a relationship between the socio-economic status and the coping methods availabe and applied by the households. Attained education level correlated with both the labor supply, and with the patterns of cosumption and indebtedness. Social cohesion declined compared to 2007, general trust in people was very low and passive, paternalistic attitudes were widespread in 2016. However there was no significant relationship between the economic shocks households experienced and the attitudes towards society. An important achievement of the research is the rich TARKI Household Monitor 2015 database, which is available to the Hungarian and the international academic community.
