The TÁRKI Databank stores databases of empirical social-scientific researches that are available for secondary analyses. The Databank is operated by TÁRKI Joint Research Center. The Databank contains more than 650 databases, most of them are sociological surveys. The primary users of the Databank are Hungarian social researchers and students in higher education. |

Hungarian Household Panel CD-ROM:The Hungarian Household Panel survey was one of the reachest greatest empirical research-series of Hungary during the post-Communist transition. In this project data was collected yearly about the period between 1991 and 1997 from the same households and their members in six consecutive wavessessions. The Databank has now published a well-documented CD-ROM version of the longitudinal database of the Household Panel survey.
Data-catalogue:The English version of the catalogue of TÁRKI Databank Joined online catalogue of the TÁRKI Library and the Andorka Library:The library of TÁRKI contains several thousand volumes. The book-, journal-, and manuscript-collection—the legacy of Professor Rudolf Andorka—is also to be found here in TÁRKI. Hungarian Gender Data Archive:The Gender Data Archive is a tematical databank section which sums up of social scientific researches dealing with concerning women and gender roles. You can also find statistics, namesregister of researchers of this field of study, description of researches and publications on this web-site. Editor: Ildikó Nagy.
Data from OTKA researches:In the last couple of years the Hungarian National Scientific Research Fund (OTKA) supported the Databank in making databases of empirical research financed by OTKA accessible by the for the public. Those databases, which belong to the unlimited access category can be downloaded through our web-site soon. Youth Archive:In 1995-96 the TÁRKI Databank, on the request of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office (MeH) created a thematic databank-section from the databases of previous years’ youth research. International relations of the TÁRKI DatabankThe TÁRKI Databank is a member of several international data organizations (CESSDA, IFDO, ICPSR, ECPR), and its archived databases are also made use of in several international projects (Panel Comparability Project, CHER, LIS). Colleagues of the TÁRKI Databank and the IT DepartmentThe director of the Social Science Databank and the Information Technology Department of TÁRKI is Dr. Zoltán Fábián. There are sociologists and computer scientists, all experts of databases, working at the department. Two libraries, the TÁRKI Library and the Andorka Library, also function within the Databank. |
Guide to the TÁRKI DatabankWhy data archiving is necessary?Archives are the major institutional guarantees for scientific publicity. The data archives besides providing publicity and equal access to datasets, they also increase the cost-effectiveness of scientific researches with making primary data available for secondary analyses. The collection of data on a thematic base helps users to find the results of researches according to their fields of interest. How can data be deposited into the archives? The datasets stored in the Databank originated mostly from empirical researches financed by OTKA and/or conducted by TÁRKI. However it is possible to deposit every database from other social science-related research, which can be of scientific interest to the users and fulfills the requirements of archives-regulations. The Social Science Databank stores numerical (facto-graphic) databases, mostly in SPSS format. This format enables us to store the variables and the numerical values with labels. The numerical data are suitable for statistical analysis. The databases are stored together with the appropriate documentation (questionnaires, sampling descriptions, etc.) ready for secondary analysis. In order to deposit a new dataset into the Databank, besides the above-mentioned requirements, it is also necessary to fill in a depository statement form. Who can use the Databank? The Social Science Databank of TÁRKI can be used by everyone. Our principle is to let databases created on public financing to be accessible by the public. Thus the aim of the Databank is to contribute to the infrastructure of Hungarian social research. The depositors can decide on the accessibility of the datasets. The users targeted by the TÁRKI Databank are Hungarian social researchers and students in higher educationResearches of the TÁRKI Member Institutions and students get 100 per cent discount, they entiteled for free service of the Databank. To request a discount, it is necessary to fill in a form for data-users. What kind of categories of access are there for users? The depositor of the database can choose from four data access categories: A – Free access without any limitation. B – Free access for Hungarian scientific research-institutions, public institutes, for others with the owner’s permission only. C – Free access for the Member Institutions of TÁRKI, for others with the owner’s permission only. D – Access with the owner’s permission only (for max. 5 years). Who finances the Databank? The Databank receives its funding from the membership fees of the partner-institutions of the TÁRKI Society, from TÁRKI Zrt, and from applications. In the last couple of years the Databank received financial support from the following institutions: OTKA, OMFB, Open Society Institute. The Databank charges its customers for some expenses (photocopying, storage of data) with an additional fee. Fees of data use:The fees for the use of databases depend on two factors. The first one is the type of the database, so whether it is a simple or a complex database. The other factor is the date of the data collection, so how recent the databases are. Complex databases are those data collections, which are multidimensional in geographic space and/or in time, unlike the simple cross-sectional national datasets (e.g. international comparisons or longitudinal analyses, or data sets made up of more databases). There are three kinds of discount one can get from the price list of the Databank. The discount does not include the technical expenses of photocopying or storage of data. These have to be paid in each case.
